First Dig - Construction starting

On Monday 11 August, Mayor Ray Wallace and Alister Skene, CFT Chairman turned the first sod for the new Taita Sport & Community Centre. After many years planning, construction on the Centre is about to begin.

The Taita College multi-cultural group performed, and pupils from nearby St Michael's School also attended.

A time capsule was buried, containing local schoolchildren's thoughts and aspirations for Taita, along with copies of Hutt News, Taita Times, library cards, HCC long term plan and a letter from the Mayor.  It will be interesting in 30-40 years to look back at!

Guests were also asked to write on a blackboard what they hope to see in the new Centre, and what is important to the Taita community.  The blackboard will be stationed outside the Taita Library to get more feedback from the community.

The keys for Walter Nash, Taita Community Hall and Taita Library were officially handed over to project manager Beca.  Demolition of the community hall will begin next week.
